Considering that the wetlands represent valuable water resources; functioning as authentic natural filters for water decontamination; improve local air quality; can constitute valuable resources of vegetable biomass, fish, timber, firewood, etc., the protection of the wetlands of international importance is essential. Another valuable resource generator is the Black Sea coastal area, as several sources of combustion gases have been recently identified on the coastline from the top of water up to 3m of depth on both Mamaia and Constanta beaches. In this context the project aims to perform in-depth investigations, necessary to develop the monitoring capacity, but also an efficient management of the natural resources provided by the Romanian wetlands.

Obiectives
  • Development and implementation of a pilot scale model for an advanced monitoring system of the wetlands from the geographical and regional areas corresponding to the Delta and marine coastline, using both the research results and the scientific and technical expertise of the specialized institutes and national research centers.
  • Elaboration of a study regarding the analysis and assessment of the combustion gases presence in the Black Sea coastal area.
  • Elaboration of a strategy document regarding the directions, objectives and research projects, essential for: i) sustainable development and capitalization of the complex natural resources provided by these areas, including through tourism; ii) confirming the presence and analysis of the possibilities for combustion gases exploitation and capitalization in the Black Sea coastal area
Results
  • The identification of general and specific elements regarding the environmental policies from the UE member states which are relevant for the protection of the wetlands of international importance.
  • Pilot model of the monitoring system used for Romanian wetlands of international importance.
  • Study on the analysis and assessment of the presence of combustion gases in the Black Sea coastal area.
  • Database with phisical-chemical parameters and biological characteristics of the natural resources of monitored wetlands (water, sediments, micro-organisms, avifauna and ihtiofauna).
  • Strategy document for protecting and capitalization of natural resources offered by both Romanian wetlands of international importance and the Black Sea coastal area.
  • National and regional debate of the resulted documents, in an open forum within scientific sessions with the stakeholders in the field: institutions / companies / owners who possess and / or manage wetlands of international importance, businesses / commercial entities from the public and private sectors, institutes, centers of applied research, universities and public authoritie
